PB2A: Comparing Genres

When looking through the UCSB library, it is very simple to find a lot of scholarly publications that you can find and are very accessible. When I was looking through after our lesson with Gary to find some articles I could work with on this project. I thought about what classes I am going to be enrolled in next quarter, and one of those I Astronomy 1. This course is very interesting and can be a lot of fun—even though the text in the publication is hard to comprehend. When analyzing this information it requires a lot of brain power (which I don’t have). The author of this publication Peter Brown wants to challenge the students he has tailored this book to be for, just like the SCIgen genre was tailored for the people looking at the websites.

These two different genres have similar yet different aspects that make them that specific genre. The SCIgen genre in all online, and you must research a specific website in order to find out what the genre is about. The book about astronomy on the other hand in hand written although you may be able to access the e-book online, the text is hand written. The evidence that Peter Brown produces is complex and hard to understand. Both of these genres have headings for each section in the writing that is telling the reader what is going to be discussed in the text. In the SCIgen genre generator program you put in a article and it spits it out, meaning that the reader needs headers in order to understand what they have put in. There are a lot of differences though, in the generator you had to know what website you were going to put in and it would spit something out at you opposed to in the book you had the title and other sources to help you find the answer. Only one of these websites has an author, for the SCIgen genre you are required to have a website and then it will pop out a program at you. That program has a website that you can find an author.

When we did the PB1B last writing project, all the websites we were given all were colorful and all highlighted. This book in the astronomy class is very formal, and meant for a audience in order to study, and learn from the text. One of the websites was about making memes, it had a lot of pictures and funny comments. The book by Peter Brown, there are a couple pictures of the moon but nothing that someone would laugh at unless you are Albert Einstein which no one is so.. If you were to be enrolled in the course of Astronomy 1, and have a book that was a joke you would not do so well in the course, that is why these two genres are very different. Although they are both meant for the audience that is trying to figure out what the text or website if about, they both are required for completely different types of audiences.

PB1B: Inspecting Genre Generators

The conventions to a genre are the components of the genre, the language, the glue of the writing piece. You need to have these conventions in order to define a genre and make the genre what it really is. For example we did the horror movie in class, and defined the conventions in great detail i.e the audience screams, the music and so on and so forth. All of these “plug and chug” genres all have conventions to them as well.

The SCIgen is a computer program that generates computer science research papers for the students. The audience of this genre is the researchers who are trying to create a eloquent piece of literature. The purpose of this website is for researcher’s to plug information into this generator and it gives you back a grammar free paper. There are multiple colors so that you are able to follow along and the bold word means that those words are important and to follow along. The tone of this genre is formal, it is explaining to you what you are going to be receiving back when you use it to write a paper for you. There are titles for every section it is discussing. The first person is used at the end discussing who the authors of this program are. The authors of this genre give their names.

The comic strips is a random comic generator that you can click on a link and it will set you up to make your own. The conventions of this genre are that it has examples of what your comic strip could be on the home page. Also the tone is very mellow trying to be funny, the word “fun” is used implying that if you click the link you will have fun. It tells you how many different combinations there are out there that you could pick from. It also wants to know if you would donate any tips to the creator of the website, he would like feedback from the people that are using his website.

The meme generator on my computer would not open because there was a problem with the url or something along those lines. My guess to what the conventions are that were on the website are you could upload pictures and it would spit back at you a funny meme that funny and you could get a kick out of.

I did my own genre, it is the bibliography page. You plug in all the essentials you need in order to make a bibliography into this websites and it shoots back the correct bibliography. This website just explains to you what to put in and then you put it in, and it just shoots you out a bib. Another convention to this website is that it gives you educational resources that can help you out. You can even sign up directly on the website, all you have to do is click the link. It lists the partners that esybib is working with, and you can also sign up for an easybib account on the website.

If you think about what is in these websites you are thinking more in depth on what exactly is in a genre. In these websites they all have one thing in common is that they are explaining what you are going to get if you are on this website. That is a major convention of all these genres. Looking at all these genres helps you understand genre better because you are going into depth in the conventions, and looking at what each genre has, what is similar and what is different between all of them.

PB1A Admissions Essay

For my PB1A I chose a college admissions letter. The reason I chose that is because it is something that every single person at this school had to write in order to get into University of California Santa Barbara. This process for me was one of the hardest, picking a topic on what to write about and then trying to persuade the admissions committee to let you into their school. There are thousands of people that apply to UCSB and you have to tell them why they should go out on a limb and choose you. In your admissions letter you are trying to convey to the board why they should let you in by telling them a little about yourself. When you are writing these college letters you aren’t trying to force them to like your work with your tone, you are trying to tell them why you are qualified for this school in a settle way. The admission’s board doesn’t want to see you be boring and tell them a life lesson, but what they want is for you to see it from their perspective. If you were them why would they let you in. the admissions board wants all kinds of people, that is why you need to stand out in their eyes. In the college essays you want to have a very formal style that the reader won’t think that this is a joke. They want to hear nice formal writing that shows that you can keep up with the rigorous work that is given at the fine institution. The admission’s people reading your college essays aren’t going to want to see the words “dude” or “stoked” they are going to want you to pick your brain and come up with more formal writing. When I first went to write my college essays I looked at all the topics, and I wrote an essay for each one of those topics with the questions answered. I saw that I had one essay that stood out in each category. When doing your college essay you want to make sure you answer the question exactly how they asked it, which means putting in the right context. You do not want to go off topic when writing these. What makes a college admissions essay a college admissions essay is that you have to be on point. You have to show the board of admissions why the hell they should let you in over someone who may have better grades or may be playing on a spots team. They are not going to want someone who doesn’t put in the effort or half asses the essay. The board can easily tell when someone has put in the time because they are persuaded by the essay. I chose this topic not only because I got into UCSB because of my essays it is because I loved writing them too, and I know what the admissions board is looking for out of these essays.

About Me

My name is Cole Anthony Martinez I was born October 29, 1995. I was born in San Diego, California. My number one priority is my family they are my passion. I have two brothers one older and one younger. The oldest one is 20 and his name is Jake, my youngest brother is 15 and his name is Myles. Along with my brothers, I have two dogs. One of my dogs is a Beagle and the other is a Chihuahua; the beagle’s name is Scout and the Chihuahua’s name is Nacho. Don’t worry, I have parents too, their names are Tom and Sami. My parents divorced when I was eights, so I am use to the split up by now seeming that I am 19 years old. Luckily for me, my parents live about 10 minutes apart from each other. My mom lives in Pacific Beach and my father lives in Bird Rock. I have been blessed with the opportunity to grow up so close to the beach. It is so convenient to be able to live 5 minutes away from the ocean. That is why I am so fond of the water, I am always in it. Which brings me to my hobbies. My favorite in the water hobby is surfing, I love being on a floating object where I am in control with what I get to do with the board. My second favorite hobby is playing water polo. I am currently a player on the UCSB Men’s Water Polo team. The reason this is my second favorite hobby is because all the rigorous amount of time is spent in the pool training. Outside of the water, I love to be with friends and family. They are my support system, and I am always so stoked when I am with them. School has never been one of my passions it has been something that I had to do. My favorite subject growing up was History I loved learning about what happened in the past and that is the reason I chose to study history at UCSB. I am going to try to use my degree to join the United States Coast Guard Academy after college. I hope to one day become a rescue swimmer and see where my life takes me. This is a little about my life and I look forward to hearing about your guys life.
